Week 12 Highlights
Virginia Tech hired James Franklin to become the first team to hire a head coach this cycle, and FBS teams showed some restraint by not firing anyone in the past week. The FCS wraps up the regular season this weekend, so expect a number of jobs to open on Sunday and Monday.
With two weeks remaining in the FBS regular season, a few of our guys sit alone with their teams in 1st place in their respective conferences after big wins last week. Texas Tech Assistant HC/Passing Game Coordinator/WRs Justin Johnson and the Red Raiders beat UCF 48-9 and have a bye before closing out against West Virginia (4-7). Western Michigan and Assistant HC/RBs Darren Paige are in sole possession of 1st place in the MAC after defeating Ohio last week. They have Northern Illinois (tonight in #MACtion) and Eastern Michigan left on their schedule. In the Mountain West, San Diego State Passing Game Coordinator/WRs Coach Lanear Sampson defeated Boise State 17-7 at home on Saturday night and will square off against San Jose State and New Mexico to finish the regular season.
At the FCS level, HC Chennis Berry and our guys at South Carolina State play Delaware State on Saturday with the winner securing the MEAC championship and a trip to the Celebration Bowl. HC Bobby Wilder and our guys at Tennessee Tech host UT Martin with the winner taking the OVC crown, and our guys at Lehigh (11-0) play Lafayette for the Patriot League championship. Offensive Coordinator Chris Buckner and Prairie View A&M wrapped up a SWAC West championship and will find out after this weekend who they will face in the SWAC Championship game.
In D2, Albany State HC Quinn Gray won the SIAC championship game on Saturday to finish 10-1, earning a #1 seed going into the playoffs this weekend.
Packers silence doubters
Green Bay Player Personnel Executive Lee Gissendaner and Offensive Quality Control Rob Grosso have been in the NFL long enough to know that it’s a long season and streaks happen. After making arguably the biggest trade of the year to acquire Micah Parsons from the Cowboys, expectations entering the season were high. Things started off well but after dropping two games in a row and getting down early to the Giants on Sunday, the losing streak seemed likely to continue. However, the Packers fought back for a tough road win to improve to 6-3-1 and are still firmly in the playoff picture. Star RB Josh Jacobs left the game with an injury before halftime and did not return and QB Jordan Love was sidelined for a portion of the game. Those setbacks didn’t stop the Packers from going on a game-winning drive and then intercepting Giants QB Jameis Winston in the endzone with :36 left to secure the win.
Nevada’s defense leads the way in blowout win
Nevada jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead over San Jose State thanks to its defense. LB Nakian Jackson had a Pick 6 to open the scoring, and a fumble recovery and INT return to the 13 yard line set up two more Wolfpack TDs. Nevada Passing Game Coordinator/Secondary Coach Joey Thomas saw his group record 3 INTs on the night, with DB Murvin Kenion II nabbing 2. The defense held SJSU to just 145 yards passing for the game. With the game under control, Nevada RB Ky Woods had a 95-yard kickoff return TD to close out the scoring 55-10, in a game where offense, defense, and special teams all contributed on the scoreboard.
Quick Hits
W&M Special Teams Coordinator Darryl Blackstock’s group had another blocked punt for a TD in their game against Hampton last weekend.
Georgetown DL Coach Cam Spence’s unit had a monster day with 7 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery holding Fordham to just 17 yards rushing.
